Online characterization of moisture transport in a high-performance carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite at high temperatures: Identification of diffusion kinetics

Prior to processing, high-performance fiber-reinforced ThermoPlastic matrix Composites (TPC) are usually stored in ambient conditions, thus causing moisture sorption. During processing at high temperature, the induces defects that deteriorate mechanical properties of produced parts. In order understand these effects, it is necessary study water (de)sorption phenomena TPC, which was only characterized low temperatures up now (<100°C). Thus, we online mechanisms (up 300 °C) on large and representative samples a carbon-fiber (CF) reinforced PolyEtherKetoneKetone (PEKK) laminates. This characterization performed thanks new thermogravimetric device named OMICHA (Online Moisture Ingress CHAracterization) developed purposely. allows continuously measure weight variation composite under controlled temperature and/or humid environment. Sorption desorption tests allowed determine macroscopic diffusion coefficient CF/PEKK several temperatures, highlighting complex dual stage diffusive behavior also modeled discussed.
